Amp-Subwoofer question

Postby Matt13 » Wed Mar 04, 2009 6:53 pm

I am thinking about getting a sub that can take 500 watts RMS and 750 max. I wanted to know what would be good wattage for my amp so that it matches my sub. I've heard people say don't over power, and some say don't under power. What do I do?!

Generally speaking it is best to get an amp that matches your sub RMS-RMS Max-Max (example 500-500, 750-750) You NEVER want to over power your sub because you are just asking for trouble. It is much better to underpower it. The only problem with underpowering is that people often end up turning the gains on their amp to make it louder which will cause the sub to clip, and in the end to blow.
The other thing you need to take into account is that you will not get the amp's advertised power output. To get the most power use a heavy gauge wiring kit, make sure that your alternator is putting out 65-75 amps, and think about adding a capacitor to your system.

Hope this helps!
